An independent survey performed at the end of 2009 / beginning of 2010, involving 7,000 Employees plus 1,900 employment organisations, specifically within the Oil/Gas, Energy and Petrochemical sectory industries, produced the following “average” salary results:-
|
Country
|
Expatriate “average” annual salary in US$
|
Percentage higher than salaries in Oman |
| United Arab Emirates | 88,500 | 30.5% |
| Saudi Arabia | 86,400 | 27.4% |
| Qatar | 91,400 | 51.3% |
| Oman | 67,800 | 0% |
| Kuwait | 83,500 | 23.2% |
| Iran | 89,300 | 31.7% |
This table is based on “average” salaries, so some Employees earn less, and others will earn more. The percentage column highlights the “cost of living” is 30.5% more in the UAE than in Oman. A similar survey performed by some major “international” banking groups show higher percentage differences between the UAE and Oman, (35% – 40%), but less than that shown between Qatar and Oman. (30% – 35%). Both independent surveys confirm Oman is significantly cheaper to live in.
The “cost of living” in other Middle East countries is a lot higher than Oman. The prime cost difference relates to housing rent expenses. Food, refreshments, clothes, petrol, car purchases, etc., etc., are basically the same in all Middle East countries. Oman does have the highest petrol pump prices than other Gulf countries, and it is still 23.2% – 51.3% cheaper to live in Oman than any of its neighbours.
